Windham Students Show Standout Growth on Statewide Assessments
Natchaug Elementary Schools Ranks 17th in the State for Math Growth
Willimantic, Conn. — Following the release of student assessment results by the Connecticut State Department of Education, Windham Public Schools is highlighting its growth and achievement across English language arts, mathematics, and science.
The results come from spring 2026 state assessments, including the Smarter Balanced tests in English language arts and math and the Next Generation Science Standards assessments. Two measures help tell the story:
Performance Index (PI) is a 0–100 score that reflects average student performance in a subject.
Percent of Target Achieved (PTA) measures growth. PTA shows, on average, how much of the
growth goal students achieved. Higher percentages mean stronger progress.
Note: The District Reference Groups (DRGs) are a classification system developed by the CT State Department of Education that groups local and regional public school districts together based on the similar socioeconomic status of their students.
Windham Highlights
SCIENCE, PI of 54.5. Higher than every other district in its DRG, and six districts outside its DRG
ELA, PI of 54.1. Higher than every district in its DRG and two districts outside its DRG.
MATH, PI of 50.6. Higher than every other district in its DRG and three districts outside its DRG.
ELA Grade 7, student PTA of 58.4% exceeded the statewide average of 56.7%.
Natchaug School Math Growth Among the Highest in Connecticut
Natchaug School students achieved a math PTA of 89.7%, the 17th highest among 746 schools statewide.
“These results reflect the daily work of our students, teachers, families, and school leaders,” said Superintendent Dr. Iris Gomero. “It is evidence of focused instruction, high expectations, and meeting students where they are. We are proud of this progress and remain committed to accelerating our impact for every learner in our district.”
